Qualities That Give a Leader Presence

My father-in-law is an amazing artist. His paintings include all kinds of subject matter – his art “pops”. As I write this amazingly helpful article, I am looking at one of his series of cowboy paintings. I feel like I am riding with the cowboys, on a horse I trained, driving the cows to the next grasslands of the Chilcotin.

That says a lot about his painting abilities.  I have few skills in riding horses, do not know much about cows, and have never lived on the range. His cowboys, the cows, and the grass are so real, one feels part of the painting.

His paintings draw me in, they have a presence. They are the first thing one sees in a room.

Presence is what leaders need to be successful. They want to attract others in a positive manner.  

We notice people who have a positive presence.  They can be either extroverts or introverts, when they walk into a room, they get noticed.

The power of presence in leadership is an important skill.  It is not what a leader does but who that leader is which dictates their ability to excel and achieve positive outcomes. They inspire others. They bring purpose. They get respect.

So how does one get this kind of positive presence?

I am a curious person.  I have been in leadership most of my work life.  As a Certified Leadership Coach, I am interested in what others believe makes a successful leader.  

Therefore, I ask people what it takes to be a successful leader. Their answers can cover a whole range of topics.  However, most of their answers cover qualities, not the skill set.  This is what gives leaders a presence – they conduct their life in a way that has impact.  

They are noticed by others.  Tough to make a difference if no one notices you or you lack depth.

What qualities make for a presence? A presence that gets noticed and secures results.

  1. They are strong, solid, and secure in themselves. You can count on them. They have a clear voice. One understands them and their direction in life. They have the sound of trumpets – clear and distinct in a sea of multiple confusing sounds.


They are not loud, abrasive, undecided, or unclear. They do not add to the confusion. They are sure of what they believe with a healthy dose of doubt. They are looking for the best way forward. They are comfortable in their skin.


  1. They are courageous, alert, and steadfastly minded. They have the internal strength to move forward with their convictions. Leaders with presence keep moving forward into the headwinds of criticism.


They are not swayed by the latest opinion or the loudest voice. They can be humble enough to admit they are wrong when they are wrong.


  1. They are on a walk to fulfillment and success. They know the positive outcome and are focused on achievement for themselves, others, and the organization. They have a map of where they are going. They have a steady pace toward the goal.

For them, prosperity is the fulfillment of their goals and achievement. Prosperity is not about who has the most stuff but who has achieved their dreams.

  • They constantly review, focus their minds on their direction, mull over the options, and focus on the best route to their destination. They are giving their full attention – mindfulness to their walk. They stay on track and do not veer to the right or the left.

  • They have insight, a comprehension of what it takes, and the wisdom to make it all work. They know what they are doing.

  • They are not dismayed or fall apart by setbacks. They are not shattered, broken, or annihilated by unwelcome circumstances or voices.

  • They are sure of who they are and what they know. They are experts in moving forward and they persist in that pursuit.


As a leader with presence, you want security, confidence, and a pathway to fulfillment. You want to be comfortable in yourself, and your direction. You want to know that your pursuit is worthy of your energy.

No one really gets what it is like in the C-Suite. It is a unique experience in which few understand or appreciate your role.  I do. I care about you. Being an exceptional leader and person is not a dream.

Leaders and individuals who work with me move forward in their personal and professional lives.  They report more satisfaction with themselves and the results they are experiencing.
