What Successful Leaders Carry in Their Heads & Hearts: Vision & Metrics

If you look up what Leaders need to do, you will find an amazing array of things they should do, ought to do, or wish they had the time to do. Sometimes a leader can feel they are drowning in a sea of tasks.

There is nothing wrong with a list of “to-dos”.  Important stuff needs to get done to be successful. Normally, success and the feeling of achievement come from multiple things getting done.

Here is the good news. Leadership is not just a list of tasks.

Vision is what a leader lives and breathes. Leadership inspires and motivates. Inspiration is not on a task list – it is in the heart and mind of a person who is a leader. Vision saves a leader from drowning.

A leader may need to renew, reword, or reemphasize their vision but it is always top of mind. The vision keeps the leader engaged and invigorated.

Vision answers the question - why are we doing what we are doing at this time?

Vision Lets Us Know What Matters.

Life and work are messy. You may have noticed that life is not always perfect. Vision will keep you sane during these times.

Humans tend to need an overarching idea of what is important. Without it, they drown in a sea of discontent and lack the energy to move forward.

Vision looks to the future with wisdom and insight. The result is a way forward that is compelling and meaningful. This is what beats in a leader’s heart.

The leader is recognized as the leader because they have a picture of today and tomorrow’s tomorrow.

The late Michael Ziegler who was the CEO of PRIDE Industries grew PRIDE from a meeting in a church basement into a countrywide, multi-million-dollar organization. PRIDE trains and does job placement for people with disabilities.

He said that success was attributed to him because he was the vision carrier of PRIDE. The PRIDE vision resonated with Mr. Ziegler.

I do not think anyone will be opposed to this concept: the vision must be the heartbeat of a successful leader.  

A Key Component of a Powerful Vision is Metrics.

“Say what!” you exclaim. Is not all that measuring, tracking outcomes, spreadsheets, reviewing gross and net revenue, and every other activity that comes under the title of “Metrics” a drag to vision?

The answer is no. The truth is, without knowing the numbers a vision withers.  If the gross income is eaten up by the same amount of expenses – then the vision lives in a vacuum.

Imagine the joy when the numbers reveal a healthy net revenue. There is a thrill when a new source of revenue is started and joy when this “baby” produces a net revenue.

Net revenue is the only revenue that can be used to fund the vision. If money is borrowed to fund the initiative, it is imperative that net revenue is tracked after debt payments. All expenses need to be determined to give a true net revenue.

The important reference for leaders is that they have key measurable indicators that reflect the desired results of their Vision. These are the big numbers. These are the memorable numbers that you keep in your head and heart.

The Vision Will Die on the Vine without the Numbers to Make it Grow.

For instance, one needs to know the amount of water and nutrients for growing strong vines and the anticipated fruit output. Wonderful wine comes from well-grown grapes.

Michael Ziegler, the late CEO of PRIDE Industries, had a handful of big numbers that he kept current. These numbers reflected the vision. For instance, the number of people with disabilities who were trained and employed, and the number of people with disabilities who were now experiencing increased independence because of employment were monitored. These and other numbers demonstrated the vision worked.

A vision statement is essential to:

1. clarify your heartfelt picture of the future,

2. to keep your energy flowing into what is important, and

3. refer to when all the to-dos crowd into your mind.

Remember to focus on the big numbers that show your vision is being implemented and making a difference.

It is so rewarding when a leader gets both vision and metrics pulsating trough their minds and hearts.

They Make the Best Leaders.

As a leader with vision and metrics, you will experience certainty and a pathway to fulfillment. You will know that your pursuit is worthy of your energy.
